Ian Taylor agency ship in Mejillones on maiden voyage with wind-assisted propulsion system

Agency by Ian Taylor, Nippon Marine’s MV Koryu arrived in the port of Mejillones on Monday on its maiden voyage with the wind assisted propulsion system, which uses wind energy to create the effect of pushing the vessel when the wind hits the rotating object.

When wind conditions are favourable, it allows the main engines to slow down, saving fuel and reducing emissions, while reducing the power needed to maintain speed and travel time.

The Nippon Marine vessel, whose agent in Chile is the Empresas Taylor subsidiary, carried sulphuric acid for mining operations in the Antofagasta region, a service that is performed regularly in this northern Chilean port.

According to Sergio Vergara, Ian Taylor’s Operations Manager, “for our company, which is a constant agency for ships that mobilise products destined for mining operations, it is a source of pride to be able to contribute our expertise to welcome these ships, which, on this occasion, are making their maiden voyage with this rotor, which is a contribution to the environment and modernises the maritime port industry”.
